Interesting Design But Needs Work, 25 Aug. 2017

I was not sure if two or three stars for this “Camera”.

The name Motorola I associate with quality electronics and of course mobile phones, this gadget however is Motorola in name only and is manufactured by Binatone which is a name I have not heard mention in years and it was not associated with quality.

    Anyway the camera.

As with most such gadgets, the first job is to put it on charge for six hours (the battery is built in and cannot be replaced), thus I left it on overnight.

No settings are possible on the camera and from what I can see it does seem to remember the last video and picture mode (including white balance option) you set in the app (but not 100% if this is always the case).

My only major disappointment with this camera is it has no idea of is the current date or time and any images, videos seem to get dated in October / November 2016 and thus they appear on your phone only in the past timeline.

It seems to have a real time clock and thus I would have thought the app (which can update the firmware) could set the correct date and time.

Like many other such gadgets, it first uses Bluetooth to connect to your smartphone and then Wifi making your phone use your 4G connections (the application cannot be installed on a tablet or iPad, I guess because they typically have no 4G connection).

The app takes about 40 seconds to start up and see the camera image, the android app work best in landscape mode.

Live streaming (which I did not try) only works to Youtube and will use your phones 4G data allowance to upload it..

Recording battery life not using live view (wifi) off is pretty good and the quality app will even sometimes tell you the battery capacity is 255% ! and also does not update the free memory space on the micro sd card after you use the Format option, corrects once you star recording. (Note, camera only supports a maximum of a 32Gb card).

Anyway, recording in maximum quality (only has mono sound which has a great deal of background hiss which you will notice only if recording in a quiet location) it recorded for 90 mins which I thought was pretty good, however, when using your smartphone to view what is recording the time is dramatically reduced and the claim of 80 Metre Wifi range is a little out, the best I could get outside was 14 Metres using a Motorola Smartphone (Android 7).

There is nothing really wrong with the picture quality but no user control over steady shot or image width (other than changing video resolution).

Charging from flat to full took 128 minutes.

Like many cameras, it makes files of just under 2Gb thus you end up with your 2016 dated files similar to this

    M0060006
    M0070007
    M0080008
    M0090009
    M0100010
    M0110011
    M0120012
    M0130013

These are typically 9 mins 58 seconds long.

You can connect it to your PC by the USB cable to access the files, or try and transfer them by WiFi or of course remove the card and put it in a reader.

I used VLC and put them in a playlist to view the video output as a single file.

It comes with a range of case accessories and they also sell an accessory kit. These have a standard tripod thread but there is not flat surface for your tripod or other accessory to tighten against and thus I fear it may unscrew.

Other than the ability to live stream to YouTube via your phone which I think most phones can do anyway, this is not really that different from may other action cameras many of which are cheaper (but a different shape).

No mention of how water/rain resistant the camera is when not in its 25 metre case.

Instructions are very brief and I would have made the power and shutter buttons different colours to avoid confusion during operation.

The Android app also seems to lack a graceful way of closing it and I found the onscreen icons confusing as was trying to upload videos which typically resulted in just a single frame (dated in 2016).

I would also like to use it with my Android tablet as the larger screen and greater storage would be a bonus, but it wont let you install the app, not compatible. Surely the app could just disable the live streaming option?

    EDIT#1: 19/09/17
Finally got a response re the date and time not being set by the app which is written by yet another company….

SE-4076 – Hubble Connect for VerveCam”

    Hello,
I apologize for the late reply.
We found the root and it will be fixed by a new app version, I will let you know as soon as we release it.
Please let me know if you have any questions in the meantime.

Some other observations after using it some more…

Steady shot – If it exists it does not seem to be very effective (tried in different video modes…

Good camera, shame about the app, 29 Sept. 2017

What a horrid app for such a nice bit of kit. Needs further work development team!

The camera itself is wicked, it has a fantastic picture quality and the sound is very good at picking up. Unfortunately, too good. If you’re specifically trying to get sound for something, be prepared to have aunty Mavis in the background moaning about something totally unrelated to your targeted sound.

The lanyard is pointless. I’m pretty sure I didn’t want a video of my top. Maybe would have been better to include a magnet badge or clip to keep it focussed forwards.

The camera itself, it’s good. It has only two buttons that need attention. If you’re not familiar with these, you won’t know what they do so read the instructions!

I haven’t tested this underwater, it’s generally frowned upon to take cameras into the swimming pool here.

Overall it’s a decent enough camera with functions I’ve yet to try out properly as the opportunity hasn’t arisen. It records video well, sound is good and it’s best uploaded via USB as the app is horrific.

Good Camera let down by little issues and a poor app, 4 Sept. 2017

New portable camera made by Motorola which is advertised as something you can wear to stream feeds straight to social media like youtube. Device comes packaged with 4 different attachments (mentioned later) a UK and US wall socket adapter and a USB charging cable. The camera comes with no on board storage meaning you stream through a paired mobile or you can use a Micro SD card which does not come supplied.

The device takes approx. 6 hours to charge however the light seems to go out after an hour which can lead to you thinking it’s finished when it’s nowhere near done. It’s probably best leaving on charge overnight just to be sure.

    The Camera
Really nice looking white camera which is small, stylish and nice to hold in one hand, not too heavy either. The mic picks up voices well but can easily pick up background noise. The speaker however isn’t great and be quiet and distorted. The device sometimes seems to talk to me to tell me the power is switching off, a few times I missed that the battery was dying on me and the camera switched itself off without telling me. This was because the light indicating the battery was dying is placed on the front of the camera so my filming was cut short unbeknown to me.

The attachments that come packaged are:

    Tripod Mount (Tripod not included)
I did not use as I do not own a tripod, however there is also the same ability on the waterproof case

    The Wearable Clip
More designed for bags and a jacket/shirt pocket

    Bumper and Lanyard
Probably the nicest looking of the 4 allowing you to carry the camera around. Don’t be fooled about using the camera to film everything from your neck though, the camera has a habit to bounce around and even flip meaning you will be filming your chest and most people’s chests. It would have been nice to use the lanyard for the other attachments however the lanyard goes through the case and camera meaning that to change attachments you need to remove and add it every time you switch.

    Waterproof Case
Says up to 25 meters which could be great to use on holiday in swimming pools when or water slides. I haven’t yet managed to test the camera in these situations as yet and I didn’t feel comfortable bringing it with me to my gym pool however tested it in the bath and the camera still works and the footage was decent enough.

It would have been nice to get a head attachment too as I feel this would have been the obvious choice to use this style of camera as it allows you to aim with your head where you are looking rather than around your neck which makes no sense. There is such an attachment however like the SD card you have to purchase separately.

There are only two buttons on the camera, one to turn on/off and take a picture or start filming and the other to choose between photo, video and live stream. These buttons are both the same colour and unless you know which does which it’s hard to tell by quickly looking at them, this becomes so much worse when the camera is in the cases which than have no indication at all!
When using the video there will be a light on the top which will be on solid when filming and blinking when paused. This isn’t clear in the instructions which lead to me filming a lot of inside my coat rather than what I wanted at the time meaning I missed my partners horse riding and wild deer running through the field.

    The App
I dislike how this camera connects to your mobile, it connects via Bluetooth to locate and Wireless to use however when connecting to the wireless you need to drop your current wireless connection as you can only be connected to one at a time meaning you will be using your mobile data. This makes viewing and transfer of information very slow. Also every time you pair the camera via the app you need to connect via your wifi settings to connect again every time.
Talking about transfer of information, every time I have transferred a video longer than 10 mins the app crashes and you have to start over! (for the record, I am using IOS). The best way is via the USB and a computer.

When using your mobile to viewing what you are filming and to edit there is a lag of about 5 seconds which makes things hard to follow live. You are better off just filming what you need straight to a memory card and upload later. The issue with this is that you have no idea without looking at the front if your camera is the correct way up. Some of my videos have come out at a slight slant because of this!

    Live Streaming
Unfortunately I was unable to test this as this needs your phone’s 4G connection to work and the moment you drop signal you lose your stream. Not only this but the app also has a habit of crashing which means you need to start the set up all over again. I am sure this would be a great feature if they could sort out the app itself…
