This is a really good phone for an older person or someone who wants a mobile but struggles with technology.

It’s just a phone, 2G, so will call and text message, but little else. Perfect for a basic user!

It’s a clamshell phone, so closes into a compact device, and flips open to reveal the screen and keypad. It has a smart rubberised black coating making it look nice and easy to grip/hold. The buttons are nice and big for older people to use, with big numbers making it them easy to read. The screen is bright and simplistic, with not too many symbols to confuse you.

It comes with a USB plug, USB charging cable, battery, and docking station. You’ll need to get your own SIM card. Insert battery and SIM card, then fully charge (either via the docking station or via the micro-USB on the side). It lights up when charging.

Has nice loud alerts and notifications, and it flashes when ringing. Calls are accepted by just opening the phone, so no need to find the right button to answer. There is good volume during calls, making it easier for those hard of hearing.

The charging dock is a great addition for older people who wont have the manual dexterity or vision to insert the micro-USB into the side.

Great additional features include an external torch, connectivity to hearing aids, and a big SOS button on the back that an older person can press for 3 seconds if needing help without having to worry about opening the phone or dialing a number. This feature has to be set up, but will then send an SMS to up to 5 numbers to let carers/relative know there is a problem, and then also ring the same numbers with a pre-recorded message.

For the more adventurous, there is a microSD slot, camera, bluetooth connectivity if your Granny really feels the need to video her 100th Birthday party!!!

Excellent phone – simple to use with some handy emergency features, 8 Mar. 2015

A phone aimed at the senior members of our society, but equally I feel it is suitable for anyone who wants a SMART features stripped back phone for calls and basic functions.

The M405 is based on a retro mid 2000’s flip style phone which were very poular at the time.

This phone comes unlocked and has no alliance to any network, so it is free to take any 2G SIM card (not supplied) and will work on any UK 2G network.

    Look and feel

The M405 is neat, compact and quite light, it is finished in a nice smooth matt black finish and when flipped open it reveals a shiny gloss black plastic finish. The keyboard has deliberately designed to be basic and simple to use – the keypad has big, clear numbers with easy to find and navigation menu buttons, power on/off and dial out – so it’s ideal for the vulnerable to make and receive calls with minimum fuss.

    Powering Up

The visible screen is basic and is perhaps a little small but it is clear with large fonts.

    Menu Options

Where as original flip phone models had quite extensive menu options, I particularly like the M405’s simple menu scroll through with large screen filling icons and font size text. To move from one feature to another you simply press any of the arrow buttons and it easily and clearly flips through the options. Sub menu options are also easy to navigate and thankfully the number of options, such as ring tones are limited too, for convenience and simplicity.

Connectivity / sockets / buttons / battery etc

It charges via a USB lead and it comes with a 3 pin plug and a cradle to stand it in. When charging a clear bright LED indicates the charging progress. On the right hand side the phone has easy volume up/down controls and a combined volume booster and torch short cut which is a well throught through quick easy function. On the left hand side is a 3.55mm headphone socket and the small usb micro sockets for charging. micro-SD memory card can be used too, but is not supplied.

The battery is detachable and as is the style with these type phones is accessed through sliding the back cover. the sim card socket is udnerneath the battery which is easy to flip out.

    Key features

This phone has all the basic features you would expect:

    – phone calls
    – alarm
    – calendar
    – phone book
    – SMS text
    – Memory numbers storage
    – Wallpaper
    – Camera (basic 2MB)
    – Ring options / vibrate etc
    – Audio player
    – FM radio

New features include bluetooth, but this is not a SMART phone therefore there is no wifi or internet connectivity.

    Emergency / quick call features

The M405 has some specific features so in an emergency calls and texts can be activated quickly and easily.

    SOS Button

This is an excellent feature. On the back of the phone on the outer cover is an SOS button. This button can be pre-groammed with pre-set numbers for family/friends/ carers and when pressed for 3 seconds will activate the SOS function:

    – A loud siren from the loudspeaker
    – Sends an emergency SMS to any of the five numbers programmed
    – Then it calls the first SOS number programmed with a pre recorded message and the receiver presses 0 to accept the call. If the number is engaged, no answer it even automatically redials and then goes through other numbers in sequence

    Human Voice

This fucntion allows the option to hear spoken numbers to aid use for the elderly.

So, in summary a great little phone packed with basic and extended safety features for the elderley and vulnerable and if my parents were alive today I would certainly be programming this phone for them to help to keep them connected easily and for emergency use.

    Recommended.

I was very pleasntly surprised at how good this Binatone Big Button Clamshell phone is. To be honest, I was expecting something very basic, and clunky but found it to be well made, quite stylish, feature rich and easy to use.

It reminds me of the Motorola RAZR v3 (which my wife still uses) but has a lot more features. I.e.

    Bluetooth
    Audio Player
    FM Radio
    Torch
    Camera
Human Voice (to speak phone numbers)
    SOS feature
3 x memory buttons for favourite numbers
Micro SD slot … Up to 32gb

Set up was very easy, and it is also supplied with a charging cradle, USB Plug socket and cable. It can also be charged via a computer, or in the car using a car USB charger.

The manual is clearly written, and although I had reach for my specs, it was readable … Unlike some other manuals where I have had to reach for a magnifying glass.

It tok me ages to find the SD card slot … Which is logically situated next to the sim card slot. There is actually a little graphic, which I didn’t see, and couldn’t find a reference in the manual.

    Great phone, highly recommended.
